The meaning of words is a reflection of social life and national culture, and the development and changes in social life and national culture will lead to changes in word meanings. The evolution of the meaning of "wife" illustrates this point. In today's society, with the improvement of women's status the old habit of "male superiority and female inferiority" in the family has been changed. "Wives" not only have more saying but even have absolute-making power. A new pattern of "female high and male low" is forming. Based on this, we comprehensively and deeply review the development and changes in meaning of "wife" using methods such as diachronic investigation, aiming to reveal its hidden social and cultural significance. This is greatly beneficial to both understanding word and practical teaching. It can be said that the transformation of word meanings is closely related to social life and national culture. Without the carrier of language symbols, social culture cannot be sustained; similarly, without the content of social culture, language symbols would cease to exist.
